With the four album set "Angola - As 100 grandes músicas dos anos 60 e 70” (Angola – The 100 Greatest Songs of the 60s and 70s), you can take a musical journey through the most creative years of Angola.
These recordings were made at Valentim de Carvalho Studios in Luanda, from 1968 up until 1975 (the year of Independence, when all the tapes were taken to Lisbon and kept in a warehouse until now).
Outside of the 8 tracks released in the Africa Crioula (http://africacrioula.calabashmusic.com/) compilation, these 100 tracks are now being released in a digital format for the first time. These are original recordings, previously unreleased and available for the first time now in this digitally mastered collection.
This music was something unique for it's time, and later spread throughout the world and gave form to many other genres. All of these artists were originally from Angola, and due to the difficult period of the war for independence in the country at the time, some of them emigrated throughout the five continents, taking their own culture and music in the luggage, others (as Sofia Rosa) were killed later for political reasons during the civil war, and some others became major local artists as Elias diá Kimuezo, today with career spanning 55 years!
Artists such as Carlos Lamartine, Africa Show, Teta Lando, Chico Montenegro, Mário Silva, Santocas, Santos Júnior, Águias Reais, Quim dos Santos, Artur Adriano, N'Goma Jazz, among others, see their recordings for the first time digitally. Semba is the king of the popular music of Angola of this time, but you can also find Kazukuta, Kilapanga, Rebita, Dikanza and Merengue among these 100 songs. The fourth album is mainly ballads. Apart from some songs sung in Portuguese and Umbundo, most of them are sung in Kimbundo (the Luandan and northern Angolan language).
"Angola – The 100 Greatest Songs of the 60s and 70s" is a multilingual musical expression of Angola. Today, the locals still speak more than 20 different dialects, although Portuguese is the official language.
This collection discovers some of the hidden treasures of Angola from one of the finest creative periods of the country. Released in 2007 on Different World, Portugal.
Styles include Semba, Angolan Merengue, Kilapanga, Rebita
